Plugfest question

Do you have to turn the plug from scratch yourself, or can you enter a plug that you bought/ho'd, stole..............whatever, and painted it youself?

WoodyCT 12-31-2009 10:59 AM

Great question

Last year some guy, using nothing but bondo, an airbrush and some elbow grease, upstaged true craftsmen simply because the voting public chose cosmetics over masterfully crafted remakes of unusual vintage plugs. :o

A division for refurbished plugs is needed.

I won't be doing that this year.

Swimmer 12-31-2009 12:25 PM

So Woody, I guess I am good to go on entering a plug that I painted.

Karl F 12-31-2009 07:45 PM

Maybe.. ??
this will help...

if not.. then send a PM to slip, or the boss, and get their input...

I suppose so Frank, if that's what you have to do,
but most of us make the complete plug ourselves

nothing wrong with bondo plugs or fiberglass plugs or pvc trimboard plugs, what difference does it make?

Woody, you give the impression that the plug you mentioned beat out some other catagory of plugs  did that happen?

I am pretty sure we had a restoration/representation of a classic award last year. And we'll have it this year too.
Maybe some written explanations to go along with them will be in order this year so the general voting public can have an idea what they are voting on.

Thats O.K. I'll wait until I get a lathe I guess. Don't want to upset the apple cart.

Tagger 12-31-2009 11:31 PM

yea someone could argue its says plug building forum ... not plug painting forum .. I would hope any entrys would have had to go through the thought process of weighting , thru wiring or rigging, lip selection if a metal lip,, and some testing . Some peoples painting skills are stella but its more than that ..

Maybe there should be a category for "rebuilds". Why squash a guy's creativity?

you won't upset my apple cart :)

if you want, come over here and use my lathe, it does a good job of collecting dust, machines are meant to be used. I'm home all weekend

Thats a good entry level idea .. But keep it seperate from the scratch builder who's wracking his brain trying to make something that swims decent ..

numbskull 01-01-2010 01:24 PM

I'm of the mind set that it is best to let the fish do the voting.

I wonder if anyone has done this that you don't know of, because no one ever asked everybody who entered plugs.

I wasn't talking about re-painting but starting from scratch with a blank and doing all the work. I'll wait till next year.

Tagger 01-02-2010 12:27 AM

Wait till next year ? .. plenty of time ,,. go for it ,, we're here to help .. who knows if we'll be around next year .. What do you need ? a Pikie lip ? 00 shot ? its in the mail ..

BigFish 01-02-2010 07:28 AM

Frank.....when do you have a free weekend day? You come over here and I will give you a lathe lesson and help you turn a plug, drill, whatever! I got hardware and all kinds of stuff! Let me know!!:) I am home weekends so.........:uhuh:

ProfessorM 01-02-2010 08:50 AM

Didn't Flap basically do just that? He took a plug, be it was a classic old plug, but stripped it down and refinished it. I think what Frank is doing is the same thing pretty much, No? IMO if he states that is what he did I see no problem. You just wouldn't put it up against a completely, from scratch, fabricated plug. I really do think we need to have specific categories for the entries, not too many but a few. Some people get up tight about this stuff. Personally i could care less and do it for the fun but others get really serious about the competition part and if it is going to be serious i think we need specific guide lines so there will be no complaining after the fact. Just my 2 cents and if you need someone to draw up these specific rules I will volunteer and if you think there are enough rules in place now than I will shut up. Like I said I don't care about the brass ring I just like to see the plugs and do it for the fun of it.

BILLC 01-02-2010 10:27 AM

Since last years PlugFest was the starting point for me to actually get motivated and build my own plugs I will only be in one category.:grins:

numbskull 01-02-2010 10:41 AM

Perhaps anybody can enter, they give all the plugs to me, I fish them for a season, and I let everybody know who the fish picked as a winner the following year?

It's a tough job, but somebody has to do it.

Backbeach Jake 01-02-2010 10:57 AM

Brass ring? I thought we were playing for twinkies.

George, from your pics, you could make anyone's plug a star.

Swimmer 01-02-2010 12:10 PM

Plugfest

I would have gotten back sooner on this post, but I keep going by NEBE's Car Wash and come unglued, and lose myself.

I appreciate all the response to this post. Larry sent you a PM.

I think it was smart of me asking before I just showed up with a plug and plopped it on the table.

Tagger thanks for the parts offer, but I have most of the stuff. Many different lips, weights, and all the other stuff. Appreciate the kind offer.

Never a big fan of the contests.....always turns into some pissing contest! The only contest I like is the one with myself! And I always win!:) You can keep the contests.......I will be there but could care less about them!:smash:

Raven 01-02-2010 02:12 PM

mmm hmmm

there could be categories

not that their isn't.....ALREADY

but best hand carved , turned?

there was a tremendous amount of work
that went into that winning plug WOODY

and when i "saw it "
and the builder said he had already
caught fish on it
i told him to
definitely ENTER it.
:uhuh:

BigFish 01-02-2010 04:24 PM

We have the same categories every year....why can't we ever remember what they are?? Remember folks....ya can't please all of the people all of the time!

ProfessorM 01-02-2010 05:33 PM

Personally I don't even consider it a contest. I consider it a plug showing:). I am trying to compete with Kramer. assman

because Visions of SUGAR Plugs dance in our heads!

Slipknot 01-02-2010 09:29 PM

my memory isn't what it used to be but I'll take a stab at it

1. Rookie
2. classic
3. general

then the goofball or unfishable???

it's just a fun competition where the winners get twinkees and a certificate and braging rights.

Frank, I don't see why you can't use a kit body to start with, especially if you're a rookie.

Swimmer 01-03-2010 11:39 AM

Slip, you guys that started plugfest in your garage wasn't it originally should make the final decision on who does what. I think I'm going to hit Larry's and turn a couple anyways. I have done beans yet this fall or winter. Have been to busy with everything else. I appreciate all the feedback. Tanks.

WoodyCT 01-04-2010 12:21 PM

:uhuh:

Sorry if any feathers were ruffled by my vague comment.

I was talking about a bondo and repaint I did on a big Lupo danny that won Best Representation of a Classic. Thus my blushing smiley about being embarassed for it.

My point was that my pretty paint job should not have beaten out guys who fabricated representations of classic plugs from start to finish.
