Breachway blank
 

Looking to build a conventional for bucktailing, eels and spooling plugs. Throw up to 3-4oz. Considering fiberglass for it's durability and occassional lifting of smallish fish up. I considered a SB1213M, SB1363M, SB1362M all cut to 10'. I use a 1201M for spinning but want to try the conventional. Suggestions!

I have a white spiral lami for sale in the classifieds that might be a good fit. Price is right.

i use a 1208 conventional and it does a great job.

I love my sb1213m at the breachway... It's a howitzer :)

sb1213m is perfect. it's a little heavy being glass and thick walled, but it's a work horse.
i would not suggest the 2m for anything. blank is too thin and a lot better blanks around now. a sb1363m cut to 10' is nice too. the tip is a little softer than the 121. you'll need a 15 tube on the 121 and sometimes a 16 tube is needed depending on how well it was cut from the factory.

Thanks Dave. I have a sb1363m in spin which i don't use. i just might convert. How about a s-glass blank? MSB1362F or 3M? Lighter and being a composite, the best of both worlds.

Breachways, I don't know but the 1205 makes a good conventional that you would use plenty of other places as well.

if you're going to look into s-glass, look into the super seeker composites. i haven't played with the surf blanks too much, but the inshore and offshore models are pretty industructible. the lami s-glass blanks are ssb, there isn't a msb. the 2f is a nice blank on the open beach, but i'd stick with a 3m for a jetty.

I think he might be thinking of the SMB 108 3M, the longest "live bait" model in S-glass.

I'm not a big fan of glass any more, as I think that the GSB line from Lami is plenty durable, as are some of the stronger XRA blanks like the 1205 and 126 1MH. 90% or more of the guys who rock-hop at tough places like Montauk use the GSB Lamis (usually the 120 1M), and I think that style of fishing is more abusive to rods than jetty fishing--just my two cents.

I'm 56 years old and more than a hour of casting with a SB 121 3M really wears on me, and I can't ever picture myself using even an S-glass 11-1/2 footer again.

I like the durability of glass but yes the weight is a killer. My sb1363m cut to 10'6" weighs in at 18oz. I use a 1201M spinner and it's a strong blank. I was thinking of glass for price and strength. I would use this not as frequent as the 1201m. I was just looking for options.

S-glass isn't any more durable than graphite IMO. Especially the new mustard colored Lami S-glass.

Depends on which breachway. At quonny or weekapaug you could use a GSb or an arra 1205 but at charlestown way above the water I would want a real beater that you won't mind getting beat up. Since you are coming from CT you are probably fishing the closer one?

Weekapaug is a close second to Charleston. Sometimes a lift landing is needed at all three. I checked out a Super Seeker in Jersey this weekend. a very serious and durable blank. The only drawback is the price since this is an occassional use rod. GSB 1201M or sb1363m cut to 10' are likely the choices.

you lift a fish and you are asking for trouble. i know we all do it, but i would not suggest it on a graphite blank. even glass at times is pushing it. in most cases, you are high sticking and the blank will break. i will agree on a beater rod, which is why i shy away from graphite on a jetty. it will fall, it will get hit, you will bang it around. if you are fishing braid, graphite offers little advantages on a jetty to me.
