More ice talk
The chill is taking its toll on the crew. The greenie, a young twenty year old, has been let go. We don't need five hands to bang on ice. So we're down to four; and if the weather keeps on, we might be down to none. Lay up until something changes. Make a few transit trips offshore on one of the good old dragger boats--ethical or not, we all have bills to pay.
Ice is insidious. I'm tired and sore. Another day, another dollar. Been fourteen hours on snowshoes, and wish I had a pie. |
I feel your pain gf
think warm thoughts what kind of pie u like? pecan is my favorite |
Be careful of him Goosefish....I warned you he can be....dangerous!!!:bshake:
|
I like pecan too:)
|
shut your pie hole BF:mad:
|
Goose,
Banging ice of the draggers ain't no fun neither. Especially when its on the outriggers. :smash: |
MakoMike--I hear you talking. Been there. It's better to stay offshore when the weather gets thick, warmer out there as you know. Heading back home in a stiff northwest is when things can get heavy. For Point Jude boats anyway.
|
Goosefish If things get really bad I'll lend a hand... I'll do anything once:smash:
|
Eben--sure. But it's much more fun when the bass are there. You got to give oyster bassing a try. June.
I'd like to try spinning in the glass house. What you were doing the other day was really cool!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |
anytime... I'm shutin down for march, but before or after no problem...Hey I'd be willing to trade a lesson for some oysters:D
|
Deal:D
|
Trading is the best!

South shore sea slush.
It is keeping the swell from hitting the beach and is lessening erosion. that is until spring when it thaws and huge slabs crack. Harbor froze in. Just enough room for the ferry to run. Word is MUCH beloe average temps for the next 10-20 days. We are going to have serious Boat issues that only a breaker can solve  Hang in there Goosefish :( 2 Months to Spring ! :) |
Goosefish, I hope the ice isn't getting the best of you guys, doesn't look like theres much relief in sight. So much for holdover fishing
|
Toonoc--looks like we got some north and northeast wind coming. This will be a big help in getting the flows moving out and down the pond. Nothing but northwest wind lately, which just pins the ice up against the eastern edge. Tide isn't strong enough to move it. We've been looking forward to this northeast wind. Heading out today to prep the bergs. :D
|
John, how much warm weather or rain do you think we need before the ice-bound upper reaches of the pond free up? That is, seeing as how you are now an expert in ice-ology after this stinking cold :D
|
Toonoc--Good question, don't know, only can guess; but we've got time on our side now, with the month of march now looming its face above the horizon.
The ice is still thick in the upper pond: north of beach and Gardners' island the ice is about seven or so inches thick. We busted yesterday up there, as did some of the diggers--we need some North wind now to get it moving down the pond. This past week wasn't bad for us, good and warm. But my mind is going some crazy with all the oysters that we're harvesting, oysters upon oysters---I am tired of oyster picking now. |
7", thats what I was afraid of, will probably take an extended warm spell.
Still looking for the pile we lost from the end of the float on the dock, can't believe the damn thing floated away :smash: I bet there will be a few more floating around too after the thaw |
Went to the Ocean mist for breakfast this morning, no slush ice on th beach down there. Drove by the upper pond on the way home and it looks solid, hard to imagine running a boat through there.
