Another PC problem

Mt PC won't go to windows.
Woke up this mornind and screen was black.
Had to hit the power button to reboot.
It gets to where you have the option of starting in safe mode, last known config., and start normally...Tried them all and it just freezes.
Any ideas? Bad cpu?

XP?
Got your Windows CD?
Repair install.

crash 04-15-2006 10:04 AM

did you try "last good configuration" ?

Redsoxticket 04-15-2006 02:34 PM

Probably hard drive or corrupted windows.

Boot PC from the cd drive (with windows cd) instead of the hard drive. Now access your hard drive by reading a document or similiar. If it works then try once again to boot with the hard drive and without cd this time. If everything works then your done if not try likwids suggestion.

Yes its from Dell's site but works with most computers anyhow.

How do you do that?
I type R for repair and it goes to C:WINDOWS.

read directions at dell.com

It could be a lot of things.

From what I've read, it sounds like you've got either a corrupted operating system or a hard drive on the verge of dying. Either way, you may want to consider acquiring a 2nd hard drive, and reinstall XP on that new hard drive, so that you can boot onto that new hard drive and then copy some of yoru valued data from the old one onto that one.

Nothing blows more than losing a ton of digital pictures you never backed up onto DVD or CD.

If you believe you have a faulty drive, don't give up. I,ve experienced at times where it is something as simple as a faulty connection. I would do the following once you have attempted the above suggestions. This way if you make it worse you know where to look.

Carefully remove ribbon connectors, visually inspect then reinsert.

Remove cards and clean gold fingers with eraser. Dust and grime will cause a loss in current/voltage and failure.

The HD is fairly new, 2 months or so.
The funny thing is..The thing started up this morning and is running ok for now...I don't trust it though..
I'm backing everything up to another hd just in case.

======================================
maybe.... because i just got done upgrading my graphics card
and when i went to comp usa to get another one i took
my old one with me to make sure the slot configuration
was the same on the new one...it unfortunately got damaged on the way.

i returned home to find that the new one wouldn't fit despite the
great advice i thought i had recieved...pfffff uhuh....right...

and when i put the old one back in which is your "display adapter"
the pc wouldnt boot now...the screen was solid black...

then i remembered i had another PC upstairs that might have
a decent graphics card that might work and it did the trick!

My computer guy says I am computer dangerous. He has my computer set up with a hard drive just for the operating system and program files. All my data, pictures, music etc is stored on another hard drive. This seems to work well
Defragging often is good for the system.
