transaxle fluid check

Would midas be a good bet to get my transaxle fluid, transfer case fluid, and front and rear axle lubes checked? i have noticed transaxle fluid leaking, but havent had money to get it checked, and it has started to make some noises when being driven. Any advice? Figures i bought this piece of crap off the ex-gf's uncle, so even when shes gone i get a constant reminder of the viatch!!:af: :af: :af: :af: :af:

Noise usually means something is wrong. What kind of vehicle ans when and where does it make the noise?

96 chevy s-10 pickup 4x4, makes kinda a rattling noise torwards the middle of the undercarriage when its moving. Thought it may be the transaxle fluid because it has been leaking.

If the fluid is low it will be more like a whine/buzz noise. To check the fluid, warm vehicle to oper. temp, put trans in neutral with e-brake on, pull trans dip stick and wipe off, then put stick back in and pull out to check level. It is usually stamped on the stick which type of fluid to add.

Don't know the particular vehicle, but you described a "rattling noise" from the middle......on most vehicles, I'd guess universal joint....is the classic noise.....sort of sounds like you are dragging tin cans behind you......

Kind of sounds like the cans. Its a manual trans , 96 chevy s-10 pickupi 4x4

Does the noise go away when u push the clutch in?

BlitzinBlues 05-15-2004 04:21 PM

the rattle/noise could be as simple as a heat shield on the exhaust. i had the same problem with my silverado. put it in gear and power brake it a little and have someone look for metal on metal. good luck.

still makes noise when the clutch is in

to check the fluids in your differentials and or transfer case, you'll need to get under your truck. On level ground chock the wheels, you'll need a 3/8 ratchet. normally on the left side of your transfer case you will see a fill plug (not the one on the bottom) remove the plug and fluid should be even with the hole opening. if not use SAE 50 lubricant to top off.
The front and rear differential is also the same idea..checking to see if the fluid level is even with the fill plug. use SAE 80 or 90 to top off.
while under your truck grab the driveshaft near the ujoints and see if you can shake them...should be no play at all (up and down or side to side)

Good Luck

I second the heat shields comment. Look for a shiny metal shield held about 1/4 inch away from the catalytic converters. Its usually mounted at 4 points with a little tack weld. The welds come undone and the shield rattles against the exhasut. I have always just ripped them off when this happens.

I 3rd the heat sheild.....check it out
