Fiber To The Premise new stuff from Verizon. It is not yet in every town, and it will take some time, but when it gets there yeah baby. They are offering 3 speeds right now 5meg down, 2 meg up for 34.95 /month if you have Verizon for home phone, 39.95 if you have another provider for home phone. 15meg down, 2meg up is 44.95 with Verizon home phone, and 49.95 without. Last but not least will be 30meg down, 5meg up that is more for small business at over 100 per month. This is sweet you have your own fiber from your house back to the hub. What that means is unlike cable when you have a high take rate in your neighborhood, it won't slow down when everyone is on. Soon video will follow, including on demand games,shows, and movies......

That would be a very good thing at my house, and It would be nice to drop one of my T1's at work and use this. I can't wait for good streaming video

My only problems with FTTP is that they are not ready with their TV offering yet, and compared to COX are more money for bandwidth (granted, cable shared across COX's VAN services and not point to point like Verizon)...

There is a good article in todays Wall Street Journal about this. The paper states that Verizon will use the existing co-axle in the house, instead of running fiber in the house , to reduce cost by as much as $ 80.00 per house:poke: , and they go on to state that it wont really reduce the speed....yeah right....the re-use of the co-axle cable is B.S, as they are now taking away work from their work force. Verizon better get going, with AT&T's new aquisition of SBC. I thinks real soon you will see Verizon buying the local cable companies around here, like comcast, and adelphia, befor AT&T does, but that remains to be seen

Ok first they will run a fiberoptic drop to the house. They will run cat5e to set up a jack for a router for your computer. They will reuse the coax for the video, unless it is not up to specs. I am presently in a 2 week installation and maintenence class for it. The computer connections have been exstremely fast, with 20 computers working wirelessly on 1 router.

The video won't roll out right away because they have to negotiate franchise fees with each town first.

Wareham Ma will be wired by the end of the summer. Braintree, and Marshfield are on target and almost ready for phone and data rollout.

Any word on Verizon hiring ?

That alone is not a good indicator of speed as 20 comps working wirelessly on a G connection are probably only realizing 2.5-3 megs of throughput (after overhead and the near exponential loss of available pipe) when 'putin on wireless networks - even a double G wouldn't give you 5 with all of those comps.

Those towns are interesting targets, do the others, besides Braintree, have their own municiple light compaines and provide internet as well?

John it seems they are taking geographic areas served by on construction garage, and bouncing from a town covered by one installation garage, to a town covered by a different installation garage. I am no exspert on speed, but I know this stuff is very fast compared to other things I have seen. I know Abington, and Rockland will be done by the end of June, and I will be getting it. I hope they pick up the pace on getting the video in the towns.

I just got FTTP about 2 weeks ago, and I'm loving every minute of it here in Middleboro. The technician was excellent, and walked me through every step of it.

Be warned though, if you get FTTP with phone service, you'll have a battery pack installed in the basement or someplace close to a power source. The battery holds 8hours in case of an outage, and if it dies, your phone dies. However, the tech clued me in. You can get a special 12volt battery that holds up to 500hours of life.

But the FIOS/FTTP internet smokes Comcast cable for speed. And the Tech says TV will be out in Middleboro in the next couple of months.

And FIOS/FTTP is cheaper than Comcast internet. Go figure.

I had Fios installed last month and it's Great... I like the idea of my phone ringing while I'm on the Puter. I'll go for the T.V. hook-up when/if it becomes available as i currently have a Dish on the roof along with 2 antennas and have been lucky thus far with dodging Hurricanes and high winds.

LT. Dan, are you experiencing the occasional drop of internet connectivity every day or so? I mean, the router reboots itself almost every day.. the one they give you as part of your service. the VDI-624?

I haven't had any problems whatsoever..I was there during the installation and kinda looked over their shoulders and was very pleased with the way they hooked everything up. DI-624 works fine.

I fixed the problem with my router. Apparently, I did some research and found that sometimes their firmware isn't embedded well, thus why my router was probably constantly rebooting.

I did a hard reset, and reflashed the router. Since then, I've not had any problems with it.

It wasn't Verizon's network at all that was giving me problems.

Are you forced to use their router? What kind of premise wiring is done in the house / converted from fiber to Cat5? How is it converted?

It's almost all CAT5 from the basement to wherever you want the RJ-5 jack placed, usually right near where your computers are. And no, you are not forced to use their router. However, they give you a free relabeled DI-624, labeled as VDI-624 and optimized for fiber connectivity, I guess.

They will need access to your basement to put a battery pack near a power source because if power goes out, your phone will only work for up to 8 hours. But if you're smart, you can replace the 12v battery with a 500hour battery or put it on UPS. :-)

And your phone lines will work just fine as is. They don't replace these wiring. Just that the fiber needs power in the basement.

John they are pushing the wireless router. The fiber terminates into an Optcal Network Terminal,this is where it is converted from an optical signal to elctronic. There is and RJ 45 in the ONT, and they run a CAT 5E to another RJ near the router. From the router they will hardwire, but they are supposed to charge after the first computer. Many of the guys have not been charging as they have not been given pricing, or training on the new laptops for the billing part. Also supposedly you need to use the supplied router if you get the video, it has something to do with "On demand". I don't see it though. John there are some customers using the higher end routers like Ciscos, etc. You can use your own.

They are presently working on many towns in SE Mass. The projected completion date for the whole project was 10 years. That was from 1 year ago, and it did get off to a slow start, but who knows..
