Time to put in new prefilters in my repirator. I was a little surprised to find how much filtering had gone on.

The whole mask. If you dont wear a respirator you should and not one of those "dust" masks. They offer little to no protection.

Good tip. Gotta work safe. Don't skimp on the mask!

forget the replaceable element type resparators.
you can gat a 3M disposible mask for about 15 bucks

they come in a zip-lock bag, keep them zipped up tight in the bag. if they are left out in the open air, they will continue to filter the air you left them in.
there good for about 1 month of "use" use meaning 10? -12? strait hours. i'm not sure how many hours the'll be active for.
i spray cars every day. and we buy them buy the case.i use them for a month{write date on packege} then chuck em'

if you have a beard/facial hair? you have to wear the mask very tight! uncomfortably tight!
fit the mask on your face, and cover the output hole with your palm. blow hard, into the mask, any leaks? if so,, it's not sealed right!

don't skimp on the mask!!!
go to your local auto body shop supplier and they'll help you out.

sorry for the missunderstanding. i didn't mean to " brand bash" saying that 3M was better than any other brand.
but those replaceable cartrige masks get slimy and gross from use. i'de rather have a new mask then and old dirty one w/new filters on it.

some of those charcoal filters come in a 6-10 pack and most people just take one out, and leave the pack laying arround. the charcoal will continue to filter out the air you store them in. so in a month or so when you need a new cartrige, your replacements that were sitting arround are allready junk.

those 3m ones are good for 40 hrs. or 30 days{wich ever comes first} of constant use.

you put new media filters on your mask,,, how about the charcoal canisters underneath? those need to be changed as well.

Thier good Everybody uses them autobody's civil services etc.
or you can shell out some big time dough and get a scott respirator thier the best

yeah chris I'd check your charcoals and clean out your mask with rubbing alcahol.

The charcoals are stored in a safe place & individually wrapped.
I use the mask mostly for sanding dust.
Painting is almost all createx, low VOC.
I understand what you are saying "slimy"about but its easy to wash and I dont live in as a bussiness if so I would probably look for something new.

There is nothing wrong with a North Respirator if it's comfortable and fits properly. The main thing with this type of respirator (half face negative pressure) is the fit. There is something called the positve/negative pressure fit test which should be performed each time you put the respirator on. First, put your hand over the filters (to create a seal over the filter cartridge opening) and breath in. The mask should collapse onto your face and your should not notice any leaks around the perimeter. Next, put your hand over the expiration valve (that's the round on between the filters) and breath out. The mask should push away from your face. If you blow hard enough, you will eventually break the seal.

Of course, it you really want to check for proper fit, a fit test can be performed in a controlled environment with a smoke tube by an industrial hygienist. But, that's probably more information than you want.

After each use, remove the filters and wash the mask with mild soap and water than let air dry. When dry, you can place the mask on a large ziplock bag to keep it clean until you need it again.

There are tons of information and requirements on proper use, storage and selection of respirators if you so a google search.

i use a home made vac sys for dust
It sits right above the plug being turned about 6 inches away sucks real good

I was fitted, smoke tested, instructed, poked, prodded in the correct method of donning, testing, wearing, cleaning, caring for and stowing the North repirator. Kinda interesting, I did lean something from it.

Pete I broke down this winter & bought a portable JET dust collector from amazon. Hows it work you ask :btu: :btu: :btu:
