Makes me nauseous just thinking about catching something, wouldn't you like to get your hands on the nut jobs that create those bugs.

In my younger (somewhat foolish) days while we were developing code for engineering analysis ...as a joke we created a fake virus to pull a prank on someone in our office. It really didn't do anything at all but made you think your machine was screwed. had a link to a page and when you clicked on the item (which was irresistible) it

1) temporary disabled the keyboard.
2) blackened the screen and with plain boot-up like text asked if you wanted to remove all files from drive c: ?
3) when you clicked anything at all ...it asked: are you sure you want to remove all files all data will be lost? when you clicked anything it came back with CONFIRMED...removing files from c: and popped up a bogus dynamic status bar that slowly grew as the hard disk made a lot of noise and you could not crash out of it. After a minute or so when it was finished it said: FINISHED, C: drive clean and all data removed and then showed a bogus listing of the disk showing it empty with the entire disk space free.

It was hilarious to watch this guys face as he panicked while this was running..usually uttering some expletives.

But the fact remains even today it is relatively easy to write this kind of malicious crap, ours was completely harmless but it could be pretty easily done. It is much harder to stop it on a mass scale. There is probably one page of code to destroy your machine and you might need hundreds of thousands of pages to prevent it.
Some of these AV programs today are gigantic and consume more CPU resources than you can imagine.
