When do you stop Slinging Eels....

Do you guys stop throwing them once the day-time fishing picks up this time of year....or do you keep creeping around slinging them until they start to frost up.

I've been throwing more plugs lately and not slinging them....just wondering what everybody else thinks

RIROCKHOUND 10-03-2007 07:56 AM

All fall, unless weather/bluefish conditions warrant me to stop.
But I don't start day fishing until... well ever :D
Unless you count boat blackfishing...

Vogt 10-03-2007 08:00 AM

They can be really good in the super late innings for Large fish. I'm talking mid November- Early December.

Back Beach 10-03-2007 08:01 AM

When they won't take eels at night any longer its time to hang the gear up for the season. Yes, you can get an occasional decent plug fish by day in the fall during the dawn/dusk periods, but the eel thing is still my fondation fishing as it is for many others.

Saltheart 10-03-2007 08:04 AM

Sling the eels until the fish are gone. There is no end of eel season , just end of fish being around.

Also , the later in the year , the more I prefer rigged eels to live eels. Gimme that extra hook!

The Iceman 6 10-03-2007 08:05 AM

NEVER give up on eels TDF, just follow Britney's rules....

eelman 10-03-2007 08:13 AM

Live eels work all the time all season anywhere a bass swims, they work well at night and they DO work well during the day...There is never really a bad time to toss eels

cheferson 10-03-2007 08:13 AM

Never, 3-4 years ago I got fish on eels in january, yes at night.

luds 10-03-2007 08:14 AM

When I get bored with them and it happens. I always end up going back to them at some point.;)

The Dad Fisherman 10-03-2007 08:23 AM

Well that answers that :hihi:

I'm off all next week....and some eels will pay dearly with their lives :hee:

Flaptail 10-03-2007 08:35 AM

I haven't used an eel in 5 or 6 years, like pogies or herring, they make it too easy to catch fish. Now plugging, that's real fishing. Mano o fisho, one on one, fair fight.

Clogston29 10-03-2007 08:43 AM

if anything, I tend to move more towards eels as the season gets later and later. colder water and hopefully bigger, more selective fish on the prowel. they do get boring at times, but then I catch a few nice fish and it reminds me of why I fish them. The strong single hook is also nice to be able to muscle fish in and release them unharmed.

oh man, I wish it were too easy for me!!!
I find this time of year it's easy to get lazy and not do the hardcore night eel-slinging thing because they ARE some fish to be had during the day. I have to keep reminding myself that if the fishing is good during the day, it's gonna be much better at night and large will are more likely to be around!

riverrat2 10-03-2007 10:42 AM

Flaptails right, eel fishing is waaaayy to easy. We catch 50lb fish every night to the point where we get bored with it. Spots, tides, wind etc have nothing to do with it. Throw an eel out there and catch a giant its that simple. I suggest anyone who has never cought a bass to put an eel on a hook and catch a slob while they are still here.

cheferson 10-03-2007 11:06 AM

Its even easier if you sling your eels with a VS:hihi:

Yup, I like it easy..Got to be a FOOL not to...:wall:

I can smell it now, this is becoming the good old eel fishers are dummys and plug fishers are geniuses thread.
Its evolving slowly but surely :lurk: be patient.

The Iceman 6 10-03-2007 11:49 AM

Plug, what's a plug???

luds 10-03-2007 12:00 PM

I'll take bait on this one. You need to be able to do both or there are times when you wont catch when the well rounded surfcaster will. How much you do one or the other should be based on personal preferance and what you enjoy doing more.

I like that Luds...Nicely done..

riverrat2 10-03-2007 12:07 PM

Ive never seen eels get outfished by a plug at night.

The Dad Fisherman 10-03-2007 12:10 PM

Personally, I'll give the fish whatever it wants. Plugging would be my preference but I have no problem throwing rubbah, slinging eels, or chunking Herring.

Part of the challenge is figuring out what they want.....that is after you find them.

Find me an eel that even filled with lead will outcast a hab's.:heybaby:

Also, sometimes a huge plug can cull out a bigger fish when your eels are being taken everytime as soon as they hit the water.

Rockport24 10-03-2007 12:23 PM

as Stevie Van Stall and #^&#^&#^&#^&#^&#^& say at times, you can cast the paint off of most plugs and you won't do as well as you would with live eels
the bass just love em'

I have......many times. I fish with a guy who has taken seven 50lb bass from shore, mostly on eels. He usually fishes eels, I always fish plugs. I often "outfish" him, particularly when smaller (less than 20lbs) fish are around, but then I have never taken a 50 lb fish from shore, and can count the 40lb fish I've caught on one hand. I think there is a lesson there, but I can't figure it out, hence my screen name.

Smoked some random stranger on the cape national seashore, fishing needles and mambo minnows :jump:

He came over and asked what I was using :devil::devil: Ah ah wt f they wont take my #($&#($&3- eeels.. me haha sux to b u.

I stop slingin' eels once they freeze and I have to thaw them out in the water or until any shops around me stop carrying them or until I run out of frozen left over ones. Whichever comes later.

riverrat2 10-03-2007 03:55 PM

When I mean outfished I mean fish of size... I have seen people slaying fish under 20lbs on plugs while I am picking away at fish on eels. I am not really concerned about being outfished at that point.

Slingah 10-03-2007 04:12 PM

just starting...
after trying for a slob on a plug for the last 2-3 years...Im back to eels....manage a nice fish on a pencil a couple weeks back and went back to being slingah with the snakes..and guess what...they work marvelous...to each his own...

BigFish 10-03-2007 05:50 PM

plugs.....:hidin:
