there was a large group that started on SB.com when it first was created. there were only a couple northeast surf fishing sites back then and guys were looking to post, chat, get together, etc. the site grew fast. guys were sponges looking for the new method, tricked out or new reels that people bought and tested, rods, lures, beach buggies, etc. plus, all this was new and exciting back then. S-B also helped a lot of the "garage builders" of wooden lures, soft plastic lures, rods, etc., get established, have a local presence, and help the site indirectly by their participation, myself included. i think it's great when these guys participate in threads and don't feel they are too good to post or afraid they will be slammed for posting like on other sites. i don't post much on the rod building forum anymore because it's almost dead, which is weird since there is so much new technology and products for fishing rods in the last few years! it used to be great fishing and you went up to a guy or they came up to you and asked if you were online and you said your handle and you put the face to the posts.
like john, i got way too busy to post on here much anymore. i'm lucky to get time to jump on here once a week these days due to work and just life in general. it was nothing years ago to post or surf on the site several times a day. but, going back to what jim said, the site has gotten a little stale. i wouldn't want to lose the "club" feel that this site has always had by bringing in a ton of sponsorship either. maybe the site needs a few gatherings each year and we have a raffle, donation jar, or entrance fee to help support john, but also get together to say 'hi'. free is nice, but we should also support the cause. i've been guilty myself as i should probably donate a custom rod one day to help keep the lights on, and maybe this is a good a time as any, but it's just doing it instead of saying it. back to the gatherings - winter ones are always great after the holidays as guys are bored and the shows are a couple months away. gatherings during the shows for guys local to those events may be good. and, who doesn't like hooters?! they, um, have nice wings. a canal spring/fall tourney, MS club spring/fall challenge group, catch a fish on a habs plug tourney, whatever. i have some great memories from guys i met on this site at these gatherings. i don't think you will ever lose the repeated threads of best rod, best lure at night, best knot and many don't use a search feature. yes, the flame wars, i do miss them. so glad i never participated in them... |
I think bringing back the legs would be great, but one of the things i noticed is too much emphasis is placed on dates to please everyone, making everything last minute. I think if you do the four legs, and set definitive dates by march. Most people will fit them into their calander if they are serious. As a parent I am often explaining to my daughter how we can't make every birthday party, activity, or event. The same holds true here, you make the one or two you can o rall if possible, it brings us all together.
one thing I also noticed is that the site seems to have cliques, kind of like HS. I think having the legs would make it less so. I have seen few people from the site over the years, more because I have been fishing less, but it is always nice to see friends and chat I think the political forum was the worst edition to this site ever! Yes facebook is doing a good job of keeping us away too |
i lurk...but like the site...!

Btw my better half of over 14 years has more FB friends than anyone on this site. I bust her chops all the time. But she doesn't whine or get a complex about it. Go figure

When I started surf fishing a lot this site really flourished. Saltwater Edge moved away from fly fishing and started carrying more surf gear. As I got more into surfcasting I noticed more builders making custom plugs and this site got a lot of traffic.
As I slowed down my fishing I've noticed the S-B.com slowing down. Now I'm not saying there's a correlation here, but the timing is a bit odd. -spence |

Since being married and having a child I'm not very active anymore, posting or fishing. When I was, I really enjoyed the camaraderie and all the great advice like Mako Joe’s awesome eel bucket (which I still have). Though I don’t see many of the folks in person anymore, I have some of the best memories of my life that originated from SB.com and the cool people I met and had the opportunity to fish with like drumcorpfan, sandman, Casey, Dennis and so so many more. While I don’t fish much or post much anymore I still enjoy popping on the site and living vicariously through others, reading about their adventures and catches, especially during the MV derby. It would be a very sad time for me if this site went away. I might have to start fishing a lot again and we all know what that can lead to, to quote a member, “my last wife didn’t like me fishing so much :-)”. Can’t have that happen so for now I will continue to read about others fishing and wet the occasional line from the surf or an annual trip for cod or tuna on the Helen-H (another amazing memory for me).
