I just got an email from AMEX saying that I can now sign up to get my AMEX alerts on Facebook. Oh great! Just what I need.

I have a Facebook account strictly for family.

Linesider82 09-17-2013 03:00 PM

I like the site and joined somewhat recently.
The porkfrogging post was hilarious, even if nobody knows what it means.
I like the plug forum and have received good info from guys on here.
Also, since surfcasting is a niche sport where we buy some equipment from other sports to use for our own purposes like dive shops, hardware stores, snowmobile studs, etc... places that seem like they have nothing to do with fishing, I have used information / troubleshooting posts found here and it has saved time, money, & aggravation.
Outside of meeting CT surfcasters club members, I've only met 1 other SB.com member.

wader-dad 09-17-2013 03:59 PM

Some thoughts. First, I think this site is the best - its not about spots and not about the best equipment and not about bragging.

So its about feeling part of a group and getting some escape from work and going on and seeing what is up. Its great when a new guy asks for help and advice and guys here are very willing to help out. When there are no fights the threads are shorter- so no fighting is a good thing??.

I think fishing has been slow -at least for me- and that dampens enthusiasm. Good nature ball busting makes things interesting and there has been less of that. It helps when threads such as the recent ones started by Grandpa Greg (on relationships and injuries) get bought up to get good discussion). I am on Bill Wetzel's site and when things get slow he bumps up good threads from years ago that get the discussion going again.

If you look at the Fishing Charters and Sponsor Specials threads on the first page- most are as many as 2 years since the last posts. That just looks bad- maybe John can come up with new sponsors who can at least say what they are up to or what shows they are going to be at.

nightfighter 09-17-2013 04:44 PM

I agree with a lot of what Ivan said..... I don't do Facebook or paypal

Clammer, great pics, great memories. Looks like I was playing pocket pool....

I think a Fall Leg is in order to bring back some of the old ways around here.....most have never been to one

l.i.fish.in.vt 09-17-2013 05:50 PM

even though i don't post much i still check out the forums in the off season.not much internet time for me from may till fall.have had the pleasure of fishing with alot of the members, more so years ago than now.

Zeno 09-17-2013 05:53 PM

I like sb probably more than any other site (lots of Sox fans helps..haha).
I just find some places so nasty last few years that I kind of come here and that is about it. Yeah, I guess most stuff has been rehashed to death but its also true that younger generations find FB more to their liking

Redsoxticket 09-17-2013 06:37 PM

This site has an archive of data to obtain information so that new threads are not always needed. Also there are S-b members that have posted lengthy thought out posts that are unlikely to repeat themselves.

sb and ice shanty are the only two fishing sites i visit. sb every morning and night until there gone and then its the hard water addiction kicking in. both of which i have met some really cool fisherman!

jonserfish 09-17-2013 06:38 PM

and learned a real lot (not that you can tell by my fishing success)

Jenn 09-17-2013 06:40 PM

I think a little of all of the above. I think FB has taken a lot away from here. The "other sites" dont even phase me and I never go there because I fell like this is my home. I havent been to any of the gatherings in many years because life and work consume too uch of my time. Fact is I dont fish the salt much at all anymore because I simply dont have the time, gas money or energy left at the end of the week. I still feel like I can fish the salt "vicariously" because of this site. Pathetic I know but it's true. I dont have the luxury of living 5 minutes from the coast so if I want to fish spontaneously I fish the freshwater. Just dont have it in me to drive 2-4 hours after work on a friday night to fish all night and "paying for it" the next day "costs" more on the body than it used too.

I used to enjoy the get togethers back in the early days and lets face it I felt more comfortable because it was a smaller group and I felt like even those I never met were like friends I had yet to meet rather than strangers from the internet.

I have to sum up my own feelings on this subject as less fishing, less time, getting older and times a changing.

Besides know one wants to fish with me anymore after the reputation I got from fishing with Clammer, the rumors and the black and blues lasted for weeks :) Now he sasses me online because he thinks I dont love him anymore, which couldnt be farther from the truth. The truth is "it's me, not you"! I need to find a way to get my (fishing) life back!

JohnR 09-17-2013 06:45 PM

keep the ideas flowing - I've been a little stales as of late and it is leaving its scent on the site. I also have been crappy lousy work this year - nothing fluid, all over the place.

Adam_777 09-17-2013 06:52 PM

I love this place. My browser doesn't auto login to it.I still swing by and read it almost daily.I don't do the FB thing.Honestly this place feels like a club to me.Only I am the guest of a member who never showed up.I don't really know anyone here but I toss in a post or two.Everyone seems friendly enough.I have learned some stuff and still have tons more to learn.I honestly am terrible at fishing.I go out and first cast I get a birdsnest in the reel and eventually reel in line knotted with heavy seaweed.I then march back to my car and go home.

ProfessorM 09-17-2013 07:13 PM

I would be totally bummed if this site faded away. I have met and fished with so many guys over the years and call a lot of them friends and see a lot of them weekly. I consider this site like a club. I have no interest in facebook. I just like the family, community, feeling we have here. We try to help each other out in trying situations, we bust each others nuts all the time. I think it is just that people are fishing this time of year and it is a little slower than normal but I'll take slow. Works for me. I do think we could use a little more legs to get the guys, gals, together but we always have a blast at plugfest and too cold to fish nite and get great turn outs for those. I don't think I would enjoy fishing as much as I have if I had not come onto the site and got to enjoy the good and bad times with the people I have met here. I say leave it alone it will be fine.

Don I do remember that lighting storm. I was with Slip and Notaro following the lunatic Bassmaster around.

Bazza 09-17-2013 07:16 PM

I have met some great folks here and learned aot from tackle, rigging gear ect.. I do not do the facebook thing. One thing I think many people do more of is the whole text messaging with friends when there are fish around. Many people are busy with kids, sports, getting older, developed other interests...
Maybe a fall get together would be a good start

Redsoxticket 09-17-2013 07:34 PM

Suggestion: JohnR can delegate to selective people the authority to make decisions to organize events, etc because we all know that he is to busy with work and family.

Rob Rockcrawler 09-18-2013 08:49 AM

I visit the site a couple times a day, do not post nearly as much as i use too. I think the other site has had an effect on this one, as well as facebook. I think with the facebook, a lot of people are addicted to it and it takes up a lot of time. Twitter, i know its popular i have never been on it, hash tags can kiss my ass. I had some really fond memories of the get togethers at M&d's. Some really good times were had there and not cuz i kicked ass at the raffles, thanks Felecia :). I have learned a ton about fishing from this site. When i first moved to mass a dozen years ago i had a bit of saltwater experience, just wasn't very good at it. I asked some questions, read a lot fished with a few people. This site has lasted as long as it has because of the people that are here, the community that it has become. It will stick around as long as the Boss man pays the bills.

fishbones 09-18-2013 09:11 AM

I don't think it's the site fading away. It's the internet that's fading away in general. I said when Al Gore first invented it that it wasn't going to catch on. While it was pretty popular with a small group of people for a while, they soon realized that the only things the internet is really good for is porn and shopping. And those are things that you don't have to have a computer to do.

I still check in daily, but not as much as I used to. Partly because I'm fishing more, partly because I have a lot going on with my son's sports, and mostly because of work. I got a bigger office and they didn't tell me it came with more responsibility. Now, I really have to work hard to get everything done in my regular 5-6 hour day. I used to be able to get my work done in 2 hours then relax. Now it's like a real job that requires me to do stuff.

I WANT your job. I start conference calls with London at 2 to 3 AM EDT and finish my last call with the West Coast at 7 to 8 PM.
12 to 15 hour days is my normal day.

Rob, the real problem is that with a down turn in site traffic, John will have a more difficult time getting sponsors to keep the lights on. That's why a site fades away. Here's an interesting stat: Members: 8,942, Active Members: 751

Less than 10% of the site members are active members.

Jimbo 09-18-2013 12:38 PM

I too hope the site doesn't fade away. I'd be lost. S-B.com is the only site I frequent, no FB, Twitter, etc., at all. I only access the site from work and it's up from when I get in to when I leave and though I don't even post a lot, I take in all the advice, humor, opinion, how-to, photos of people doing things I'd rather be doing in places I'd probably rather be. Few forums go unvisited. It is very much like a club. On rough days, which I seem to be having more of lately, it's also like my own private breakroom.
But if the site should fade away, would that make my S-B.com hat increase in value? I'm curious does anyone else still have one?

bobber 09-18-2013 01:53 PM

theres a natural life cycle to everything... including fishing sites. lets face it, theres nothing (or virtually nothing) thats left to talk about thats really new and different. thats a part of growing older (in internet terms). I still frequent SOL, and the BST board there is a homerun if ya gotta sell something....
I think mostly because they attract new faces with little or no experience that are looking to buy gear. I do get tired of hearing about what spinning reel do I buy, or whatever....

I think some new et togethers would be great though

ThrowingTimber 09-18-2013 02:02 PM

1. Cleanup or have the 12 or so listed sponsors update/ participate.

2. Bring back the season long tournament and the 4 leg tournament.

Have the get togethers and people will go. Folks can't get together if there isn't anything planned formally. If the chief is too busy lets get some folks who like to do this sort of planning to set up the legs, run the tourney etc. AND we can discuss this over some wings and hooters :)

My first interaction with anyone from this site was salt heart mentioning a gathering at weekapaugh bait and tackle. I showed up and have been heckling everyone ever since :)

i originally came to the site because i needed more info on how to catch fish from shore. i started tossing frozen macs with an ugly stick and drinking beer on my beach chair at night. i've come a long way but still need to learn more.

haven't seen many posts as of late about fishing technique, good plugs to try, bass behavior, new gear, etc. i learn something new every season and i'm sure most people on the site do too. i think this info may be useful to everyone.

i also consider myself to not be as seasoned as most on the site and don't initiate posts frequently unless it's a question. i lurk a lot.

Jackbass 09-18-2013 03:17 PM

I will add a link to here on my FB group page. I also have a thought provoking post regarding technique I can add. Just gotta clean it up a bit.

Maybe the boss can share his vocal method for catching fish we have heard so much about ;)

Pure and simple, this site has HUMILITY and CHARACTER/S.

hq2 09-18-2013 06:17 PM

What it doesn't have is a------. I think that's one of the things that
wrecked Surfcaster; there were some obnoxious characters over
there that kind of messed things up. In the 10 years I've followed
this site, I've almost never seen the kind of nasty personal stuff
you see on some of the others (or maybe the moderators have
been quick to kibosh it). That's one reason it's been as good as it
has for so long. But, maybe Facebook is basically now becoming
a black hole which is pulling in all new potential posters. If so, then
this site's days are numbered. But I've sure enjoyed reading the
stuff people have put up here; informative, and often funny too.
A really good bunch of guys.

yeah I agree...maybe "clean up" and/or eliminate some of the stagnant areas like the hunting section. Good Idea at first but not much traffic....things like that. Maybe bring back the legs or at least an gathering here & there. Maybe somewhere that has a pavillion for rent, park with camping, etc.

I for one kind of miss crashing out in Weekapaug B& T parking lot in the fall with the wind cranking & rockin the truck. I swear it was always epic wind everytime I went :) Everyone getting together to shoot the poop and grill some grub

johnny ducketts 09-18-2013 07:45 PM
