considering the size of your but,you might need another book.:bl:
Merry Christmas pal :wavey: |
I have somewhere's around 20 surfcasting books.
The Art of Surfcasting with Lures is the best. I can tell that you love to fish. Thanks for writing it. I kinda wish you left in a few more Zenoisms. |
well ive already read so far this winter: "surfcasters guide to the striper coast" by dj muller "the ultimate guide to surfcasting" by ron arra and now i am reading "stripers on the fly" by lou tabory
|
Against the Tide by Richard Adams Carey. The fate of the New England fisherman. good so far.

Anymore news on the 2 other books you mentioned? |
Finished Zeno's Book :kewl:
Currently Reading The Trophy Striper by Farnk Daigneault and Am waiting for my copy of Reading the Water to arrive. also want to get Fishing with Bucktails by Doc Muller and give that a read |
I am reading The Zen of Fish by Trever Corson...which is pretty much everything you ever wanted to know about sushi and its history. This is not a fishing book. He also wrote a great book a couple years ago called the secret life of lobsters. ( I liked that one a lot)
l am also reading Charlie Soares new book "Stemming the tide". While not exactly a how-to it is more of a lifetime of knowledge book presented within many stories. I am enjoying it. |
Another :btu: for "Stemming the Tide" by Charlie Soares. Was a fun read

Z's book is the best thing to come down the pike on bass fishing since the first edition of Woolner & Lyman's Striped Bass Fishing.
Period end of story. |
Good time for a shameless plug....
http://www.thecallofthesurf.com/web7_sm.jpg Try The Call Of The Surf from SRI Press.... The second edition of the first book about surfcasting, most of which takes place along the Jersey shore, when it was so remote and wild you had to bring a tent....$15.99 - free shipping from the dedicated site I made for it, or get it at SRI Books & Videos page |

Seconded !!!!
The call of the Surf, Zeno's great book (which I will certainly be re-reading before April:claps:) and Striper Moon have been doing sterling service at keeping the (lack of) winter stripers and blues at bay......:wiggle: All three have been very enjoyable reading. |
Island
Although all of the stories are rooted in Nova Scotia, Alistair MacLeod's book "Island" is not a surfcasting book, and yet it tells fanstastic stories about the men of the fishing and mining communities of Cape Breton.
Its beautifully written. I can't recommend it more highly. I think it would strike a chord with just about everyone on this board, and it is perfect for the winter's musings. |
Blues by John Hersey is one of my favorite fishing books. Extremely well written

Something like "why cheerleaders hate me" by Rick Reilly. Its a compilation of his 100 favorite articles from Sports Illustrated. - easy and inspirational reading.
"The happiest man in the world" about a man and his attempt to sail around the world on a home made raft. There's also a new book out about Pistol Pete Maravich that was pretty good. For fishing books, read Lou Tabory's books even if you don't fly fish. He has a lot of great ideas on tides, currents, etc. |
I'm surprised nobody has mentioned John Cole. He has several great fishing books, and I would recommend "Fishing Came First" as a starting point. These aren't how-to books but they are a great read.

Its about a seasons worth of experiences from beginning to end on Long Island. Not actually one season but many stories woven into one season. His stories keep you glued to the pages and his writing style transforms you on location. You almost feel like you are standing next to him and casting. Although this is not a "how-to" book ,if you ever wanted to know what makes one of the best surfcasters on East Coast tick, how he makes decisions of where to go,what are his reasoning when taking in account baitfish ,current and winds you have to read this book. |

If this book was read by someone with your experience ,I would be happy. The fact you liked it is a cherry on the top:as: |

John Skinner's name sounds familiar. I can't remember where I saw it. It may have been on the forums or maybe he was a guy I remember reading in On The Water. I just googled him and yup he is the bearded On The Water guy I remember. |

John Skinner is a Surf editor of Noreast Saltwater magazine and very highly regarded angler in NY.The stories takes you from the time fish shows up ,to big bas in the inlets in spring ,his first 50 , LI sound fishing in summer thru fall run and finally to end during herring run. There is a huge mako boat story and kayak trip in there too.Irrelevant to surf but extremely interesting. All ,in all ,a good winter read
|
Zeno
BTW if you are into reading something good with a LI theme read the Al Reinfelder chapter in George Reiger's Profiles in Saltwater Angling. Excellent. Also BTW: Congrats on all the positive feedback on your book. It is on my list. |
