Throwing soft plastics…

I see a lot of people are now throwing large (and small) soft plastics using “heavier” gear. I grew up throwing 6” slug-os on a 3/8oz jig head in Chatham on light tackle, before graduating to my own version of a 9” rigged slug-go. I used an All Star 1088 (fast action) and a 704 for the latter application. I felt I had more control/feel with a fast action rod.

Now people are throwing weighted and unweighted plastic with 10-11ft rods. I would appreciate any insight into what set ups are being used for this application. I’m hoping to get out this Fall and want to keep it simple yet productive. I’ld still fish/lob 2-4oz plugs…

Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thank you and Tight lines.
 
How is going. been slow around my area. never used bigger slugos from the beach. not if i could find eels

don't throw any soft plastic much bigger than an Albie snax .. also that rods here when you want it

I throw a lot of larger soft plastics, both with and without weights. Weightless is more for heavier soft plastics like the 12" Slug-Go and the 12" and 13" Big Water Baits. With jigs it's mostly the large rubber stuff but I do add in some slightly smaller stuff that still have some weight to them. As to my set up, it's the same stuff I throw for the rest of my surf applications: Lami 1201m & 1321m or the SaltX 10'7" and 11' rods. Nothing really special about it.
 
Here is some info from a seminar I have done a few times on fishing big rubber baits in the surf. These are unrigged weights.

9” Slug-Go: 1.15 oz
Z-Man DieZel MinnowZ: 1.15 oz
GT Eel: 1.5 oz
JB BI Eel: 1.55 oz
JB BI Patriot Fish: 1.8 oz
GT Paddletail: 1.95 oz
12” Slug-Go: 2.5 oz
13" Bag Man: 3.2 oz
14" Silent Partner: 2 oz
